The Assistant General Counsel will play a key role in shaping and advancing UnityPoint Health’s litigation strategy and employment law function. This position serves as a trusted advisor on complex litigation and workplace matters, partnering with leaders across the organization to mitigate organizational risk and maximize strategic value, all in support of UnityPoint Health’s nonprofit mission and strategic priorities.
This role requires a minimum of 7 years of legal experience and significant court litigation experience to be successful. Experience to perform this role includes written discovery responses, depositions, motion practice, and trial practice, with experience as lead counsel preferred. Experience with advising large companies on employment matters is also desired.
Assistant General Counsels at UnityPoint Health are part of a sophisticated in-house legal team designed to allow attorneys to find purpose in their work, without making work their sole purpose. The Law Department functions as a high performing and collaborative team that provides an exceptional experience to UnityPoint Health leaders. This position reports to the Vice President of Risk, Patient Safety, and Litigation under the direction of the Chief Legal Officer.
Hours: Monday-Friday, day shift
Location: Applicants must reside in the Des Moines, Iowa area. On-site and hybrid schedules are available at our West Des Moines corporate headquarters.
Description:
Legal Advice & Counsel
Serves as a trusted legal advisor to the business on a wide range of state and federal laws, regulations, and standards relevant to UnityPoint Health
Provides and oversees legal services to the business served by the Practice Group, including but not limited to:
Identifying, assessing, and managing legal risks that could impact UPH, anticipating the effect on operations;
Negotiation, drafting, and management of contracts and other legal documents, ensuring they protect the company’s interests;
Managing legal disputes
Identifies and mitigates the areas of highest legal risk impacting the assigned Practice Group.
Recommends resolutions for legal and regulatory issues, leveraging knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, UPH goals, policies, and operations
Independently advises on, negotiates, drafts, and reviews various legal documents for the business
Identifies and implements best practices to mitigate risk
Conducts legal research, identifies and analyzes legal issues, presents clear recommendations, and ensures legal compliance for appropriate stakeholders
Assists with internal investigations, policy development, and legal risk assessments
Provides educational services and promotes awareness of legal concerns among the Law Department, UPH leadership, and team members
Influences, directs, and builds relationships with the legal team, business leaders, key stakeholders, and external partners through effective communication
Mentoring & Development
Support the development, education, and training of other attorneys, paralegals, and other team members
Serve as a mentor for attorneys and paralegals to help build a high-functioning Law Department
Provide feedback and input to support professional development and organizational success
Qualifications:
Education:
Juris Doctor degree from a fully accredited American Bar Association law school
Experience:
A minimum of 7 years practicing law
Significant litigation experience
Experience in medical-malpractice and/or employment law is highly preferred
Licenses/Certifications:
State Bar and MPRE
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Methods and techniques of case management, prioritization, and control
Plan, organize, integrate and manage legal activities
Proficient with technology, including Microsoft products
Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of team members, leaders, and board members
Excellent written and communication skills
Ability to advise on risk and provide advice to senior business leaders
Problem-solving skills and ability to make decisions daily relative to appropriate and applicable projects and matters, including negotiating contracts and mediating disputes
Ability to coordinate work processes and projects with attorneys and market leadership to ensure projects are completed timely
Ability to operate in ambiguity and make sound legal recommendations
