Provide legal and compliance counsel and advice to American Water’s Homeowner Services Business Unit.
Provide advice and counsel on a pro-active basis to executives, senior managers and employees with respect to legal and compliance issues affecting the business (marketing, operations, commercial transactions, regulatory, litigation, business development, corporate governance) with a particular focus on operations. (60%)
Review, draft and negotiate vendor and other commercial agreements. (30%)
Serve as a member of the functional legal team and support Division General Counsel in building the capabilities of the team. Perform other projects as assigned by the Division General Counsel. Manage outside counsel with respect to legal matters and assist in evaluation of quality, cost, and efficiency of outside counsel. (10%)
Extensive experience reviewing, drafting and negotiating a wide variety of commercial contracts balancing legal and business risks.
Expertise in home warranty/home service contracts, insurance, marketing and/or consumer focused laws is a plus, but not required.
Experience effectively handling a variety of matters displaying strong business acumen.
Experience in providing timely and effective practical corporate and commercial legal advice and services.
Able to effectively spot legal issues and determine practical, workable options for resolving them.
Results-focused experience, has worked in fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
Strong verbal and written communication skills (e.g. presentation, fluency, report writing). Strong interpersonal skills (e.g. tact/diplomacy, persuasion, negotiation, cooperation) including ability to work effectively with all levels throughout the organization.
At least 7-10 years of experience as a licensed, practicing attorney with significant experience drafting and negotiating commercial contracts.
Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
License to practice law in IL or NJ (as applicable) or ability to obtain in-house license within 6 months of hire date.
