Denton has been known as a university town, home to two state universities, the University of North Texas and Texas Woman’s University. In downtown Denton and just south of Denton is a campus for North Central Texas College, the oldest continuously operating two-year college in Texas. Public education is also important in Denton, with Denton Independent School District serving more than 27,000 students and 17 cities in a 180 square-mile district.

Across Denton, there is a thriving entertainment culture, featuring live performing arts venues, music and film festivals, museums, and historical sites. Candidate Qualification Criteria
The following education, experience, leadership, and management criteria have been identified as important skills and abilities for candidates to possess and demonstrate:
Graduation from an accredited law school, seven years experience in the practice of law with at least five years in a municipal government, licensed to practice law in the State of Texas or the ability to become licensed within twelve months of appointment, or any combination of related education, experience, certifications, and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the position.
Experience and expertise in one or more of the following areas: Civil Rights law, Fair Housing law, Environmental law, Public Information law, ADA law, LGBTQ+ law, and an understanding and commitment to how all of these areas pertain to municipal law.
Ability to work with the City Council, City Manager, and other stakeholders, providing sound legal advice and counsel. A demonstrated skill in keeping the Mayor and City Council informed and in providing advice, support, education, and recommendations, including risk analysis, as requested when policy discussions are occurring, and decisions are being made.
Ability to develop strong working relationships and interact with elected officials, senior staff, boards andcommissions, employee representatives in a positive and professional manner is required. A demonstrated passion to engage and work with others in a professional and respectful manner is required.
A working knowledge of intergovernmental relations, and the legislative process. A license to practice in Federal Court is preferred.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to clearly present concepts and respond to controversies and day to day legal matters. Adept with using technology to keep up with the workload.
Strong supervisory and team building skills with demonstrated experience in leading through subordinates, assigning projects with timelines and clear expectations, and holding staff accountable for effective implementation.
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, with a record of handling a wide variety of projects at one time and with the ability to be nimble in changing course or direction. Experience in a fast-growing city reasonably comparable to the City of Denton in size and complexity is preferred.
Bilingual in Spanish and English is preferred.
Must have a valid Class “C” Driver’s License prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class “C” driver’s license within 90 days of hire per state law).
Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, and a comprehensive background check, including criminal history, and social security number verification check.
