Stanford Law School seeks to hire a director for its First-Year Legal Research and Writing Program. The LRW Program is comprised of two required courses for first- year law students. In the fall, the two-unit Legal Research and Writing class teaches fundamental legal analytical and writing skills and introduces persuasive brief writing. The course is taught to six sections of thirty students each. Federal Litigation in a Global Context is taught during the winter and spring quarters in ten sections of eighteen students. The course is awarded four units of credit. The director and five academic fellows (Thomas C. Grey Fellows) teach both courses, and four additional lecturers teach Federal Litigation.
Both courses are currently structured to teach legal writing in litigation-focused simulations. Because SLS is committed to maintaining a curriculum that prepares students for the challenges of diverse and changing work environments, the school seeks to attract candidates interested in innovative approaches to writing pedagogy.
The director’s primary responsibilities are: (1) to develop the program’s curriculum on an ongoing basis, including revising existing assignments and simulations; (2) to teach a section of LRW and Federal Litigation; (3) to hire, train, and supervise fellows and lecturers; (4) to support and mentor Grey Fellows in teaching and professional development; (5) to stay informed about trends in legal writing pedagogy and scholarship, possibly engage in scholarship on related topics, and provide intellectual leadership on the design of the legal research and writing program; and (6) to provide administrative oversight of all aspects of the program.
The salary for this full-time position is commensurate with experience. The initial term is for one year, with the possibility of successive three-year or five-year terms. Applicants must have a J.D., law practice experience, legal writing teaching experience, excellent writing skills, and leadership skills to motivate excellent teaching in a collegial environment.
